The Ellington Society produces concerts each year which feature some of the world's greatest musicians interpreting the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Recently, we have presented such outstanding musicians as pianist Mulgrew Miller, saxophonist Jimmy Heath, trumpeter Joe Wilder, pianist Cedar Walton, and pianist Junior Mance, among others.

In honor of Duke Ellington's April 29th Birthday Anniversary each year, we produce a concert focused on a theme associated with Ellington's music and performed by world-renown musicians. Some of the themes:

  • "Caravan; An Adventure with the Latin Jazz Genius of Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol" (Steve Turre with an All Star Band, including Mongo Santamaria, Percussionist and Ellington trombonist, Britt Woodman)
  • "Ellington Uproar! ..Where Uptown meets Downtown! A New Twist on the Duke" (Art Baron and his band with Howard Johnson as special guest),
  • "Something to Live For: American Premieres of Unknown and Rare Billy Strayhorn Works" (performed by The Billy Strayhorn Orchestra under the direction of Michael Hashim)
  • "Mingus Salutes Duke Ellington" The Mingus Big Band in tribute to Duke Ellington on Duke's Birthday Anniversary
  • "An Evening of Duke Ellington's Sacred Music" Jilliard Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Randall Keith Horton.

Other concerts and themes are detailed in the ARCHIVES.
