All this is FREE when you join the Society. We've had Wycliffe Gordon, Ron Carter, Valerie Capers, James Williams, Warren Vache, Ruth Brisbane, Vince Giordano and
the Nighthawks, Kim Kalesti / Marion Cowings and many more artists delight us with their performances.
Come to our Annual Duke Ellington Birthday Anniversary Concert and hear world class musicians perform in a one-of-kind concert showcasing a unique theme. Two that we've had in the past include: "Caravan: An Adventure with the Latin Jazz Genius of Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol" featuring Steve Turre and his band; Ellington Uprorar! Where Uptown meets Downtown! A New Twist on the Duke" featuring Art Baron and well-known "uptown" and "downtown" musicians.
Join us for our monthly meeting - usually the third Wednesday eveing of each month. You will be able to meet our invited guest who may be a musician (we've hosted virtually every member of the Ellington orchestra), producer, jazz historian, scholar, musicologist, writer, or record/CD collector. You might hear a panel discussion, see a reading of a play or hear a world famous musician talk about Ellington and make his/her point by playing the piano! At our "Members Choice" meetings you will be able to pick a Duke composition to be played for the whole group to enjoy!
When you join, you will receive our 8-page monthly Newsletter - 10 issues each year! Some people are members of the Society specifically to get our Newsletter! The first page of the Newsletter will tell you all about the guest for our next meeting. It also includes a variety of articles about the Ellington/Strayhorn legacy, reviews of our meetings, parties and concerts, as well as, new books and CDs. It has a calender with information about jazz events and artists in the New York City region relevant to the Society. The Trivial Quiz will test your knowledge of the Duke and Sweet Pea (Billy Strayhorn)! You'll be able to find out which musicians relevant to the Ellington and Strayhorn story are celebrating birthdays. You can read a note from the President or write to the Editor! You might even find a picture of Duke and the Orchestra!
